“The Other Side of the Sky” is an accessible play which falls perhaps into the science fiction genre, but only very loosely. It is really a simple story about power and relationships.

Harry and Rose Applegate run Applegate Nurseries. Their son and daughter, Brian and Carol, who also work in the nursery, hatch a plan to oust Harry and Rose with the help of business rival Barney Creech. Meanwhile, on the planet Astrilon, a parallel situation exists where Valkor, the leader of the Progress Movement on the neighbouring planet Vistrilon, stealthily deposes Astrilon’s rulers, the Overseers, aided and abetted by their children. An unlikely, chance communication between Harry and Rose on Earth and those resisting Valkor’s take-over on Astrilon, leads to each party being able to assist in resolving the situation of the other.

The script provides a full range of interesting and satisfying parts for both inexperienced and experienced actors alike, and as such is ideal for established amateur groups (perhaps even schools, too). It also manages to be modern in tone without offending in content, and has a good mix of the serious, the dramatic and the light-hearted.
